The first Hungarian Grand Prix was held on 21 June 1936 over a 5.0 km track laid out in public gardens (Népliget) park in Budapest and the event drew a very large crowd. More than 100,000 spectators turned out to watch the expected battle around the twisty figure eight circuit. More races were scheduled for 1937 and 1938, but they never happened, then World War II and Communism buried Hungary’s Grand Prix dreams for half a century.

The track was revisited in the mid-80s by Bernie Ecclestone, who decided on Hungary as the location of Formula One’s first venue behind the Iron Curtain. Ecclestone was impressed with the track, but safety dictated the felling of several trees, which was vetoed by conservationists. The Hungarian Grand Prix ended up moving to the Hungaroring, a brand-new venue.

Work began on the Hungaroring in 1985 and the track was race-ready just nine months later. Much has changed since then, but the race has been on the calendar ever since, and now traditionally heralds the midway point of the F1 season. Of all the racetracks on the 2019 F1 calendar, only Monaco and Monza have longer streaks of hosting Grands Prix than the Hungaroring. Monza’s Italian Grand Prix streak runs from 1981 to today, Monaco’s from 1955.

In 1986, Formula 1 ducked behind the Iron Curtain for the inaugural Hungarian Grand Prix, the first ever Grand Prix held in a communist country. Nelson Piquet won the first F1 race around the Hungaroring, famously slithering his Williams around the outside of Ayrton Senna’s Lotus to take the lead.

Built in a natural bowl on the outskirts of Budapest, so the Hungarian Grand Prix gives you the perfect opportunity to explore one of the most beautiful cities in central Europe. Budapest is adorned with beautiful architecture, most of which was built towards the end of the 19th century when the city enjoyed a boom during the industrial revolution. The weather is invariably hot around race time, which only adds to the enjoyment of your visit.

If you’re at the track, though, is that there’s a water park close by – the Mogyorodi Aquarena – which should be a good place (11 and a half hectares). Aquarena is unique not only in Hungary but also in Central-Europe. If you like water adventures you should experience it yourself.

The track is situated in a natural bowl, with the result that more than 50 per cent of the track can be seen from most vantage points. There are four types of grandstand seat, split into super gold, gold, silver and bronze.

Track temps in Budapest are usually high, which could cause the engineers some headaches and the average speeds at the Hungaroring with the cars in qualifying trim are just over 200kph. The Hungarian Grand Prix is typically held under blazing hot conditions. It’s a critical race of the year, too, with the teams that perform best around the Hungaroring heading into F1’s summer break with their heads held high, while the underperformers endure an agonising wait to get back on equal terms at the Belgian Grand Prix at the end of August.

Did you know? Zsolt Baumgartner is the only Hungarian to have competed in his home Grand Prix - for Jordan in 2003 and for Minardi in 2004.
